Concert Review: Aaron Behrens at Blues on the Green
Review & Photos by Victoria Allen
After years of dominating the stage as the frontman for Ghostland Observatory and the Midnight Stroll, Aaron Behrens is ready to embrace his own sound. In past years, Aaron has headlined iconic venues such ACL, Lollapalooza, Coachella, and Red Rocks. He has performed with a league of legendary artists such as Snoop Dog, Outkast, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, Iggy Pop, and the Flaming Lips. Now he steps out on stage at Waterloo Media's Blues on the Green to perform in front of thousands of local music lovers in the Austin community!
Aaron is an inspirational singer and songwriter with over a decade of experience performing in front of crowds. He is debuting his solo album later this year, which I'm very excited to hear after listening to a few of his upcoming songs at Blues on the Green! His new song "Solid Ground" became an instant personal favorite for me! The song is his first single and boy does it have some DEEP lyrics! The tune starts off with a powerful set of lyrics addressing the tough times we are all living in. The song is extremely motivational and relatable as it focuses on going through and overcoming difficult challenges. Aaron acknowledges that life does get rough, which is why it's important to "keep your head up and swim towards solid ground." Expect raw, real, honest music from his next album.
Aaron's music establishes lyrics that really stick with fans. Each lyric feels intentional to the story behind the song. The messages speak on tough journeys and form a sense of hope on the horizon. It feels like Aaron is writing from the core of his very soul and you can hear it in the music. You can tell he's passionate about the music he releases and it was fantastic to see the audience at Blues on the Green connect to his powerful tunes. He played some classics and fan favorites during his live set. The crowd was thrilled to hear "Sad, Sad City," a song he wrote and released with Ghostland Observatory on his 2010 album, Paparazzi Lightning. With over 20 million listens, it's no shock that everyone loved this popular tune!
It's not often you hear country americana music with a borderline psychedelic melody, but Aaron has definitely defined his tune. Deep lyrics accompanied by cosmic instrumentals and raw vocals is the recipe for great music. Aaron's songwriting pairs unfiltered emotion with powerful storytelling which creates really impactful music. "Castle & The Crown" showcases this best as he performed the future hit song at Blues on the Green. The song really resonated with fans as many came up to the barricade to listen. You can hear that new tune along with many others on his upcoming full length album which is set to release later this year! Aaron gave the audience a great taste of what to expect from his future album. He truly left the crowd hyped and ready for the final act and headliner of the night - Alejandro Escovedo.
