Concert Review: Louis Tomlinson’s Radiant How Did We Get Here? Tour

Review & Photos by Yising Kao

As a longtime fan of One Direction, I was so excited to attend my first Louis Tomlinson show in San Diego for his How Did We Get Here? Tour. It was so amazing getting to hear him perform songs from his new album, How Did I Get Here?. Tomlinson’s energy was radiating, and the crowd was singing along to every song. Plus, his visuals were captivating – They were extremely vibrant with pop art vibes that matched the style of each song. Additionally, the lighting setup was stunning. Throughout the show, there were unique laser lights that illuminated Louis and set the mood.

First, UK-based indie rock band The Royston Club opened up the show. They were incredible and definitely got the audience pumped up. The band has shared, "To be able to tour the states for the first time like so many of our favourite artists & bands is something we’re so excited for,” the band shares. As a band that has toured a lot, being able to bring our music to so many completely new cities & new fans is an honour and coming along for the ride with Louis is going to be a lot of fun." You can check out their sophomore album, Songs For The Spine.

Next, The Aces performed – I’ve seen them live before and their music is amazing. I was glad they performed their song “Jealous” featured in Amazon Prime Video’s Off Campus, as well as their new song, “Mesmerized.” They always put on an empowering and high-spirited performance.

Louis kicked off the show singing his animated, upbeat lead single off of How Did I Get Here?, “Lemonade.” The cheering was so loud and it felt magical. One of my favorite parts of the show was when Louis performed “Night Changes.” It was so nostalgic and made me emotional, and it was ethereal watching him perform under the stars. In between songs, he also thanked all his fans for supporting him and his journey multiple times. Louis Tomlinson is such a humble and genuine artist and you can tell he’s grateful for the fans who have stuck by him ever since One Direction.

I loved hearing “Jump The Gun” live. It was such a lively performance and everyone was dancing! Louis connected with fans by walking around the stage and reacting to people’s heartfelt signs. At one point, he did a gender reveal for a fan, and opened up the envelope on stage; It was so sweet. I also enjoyed hearing “Bigger Than Me,” the lead single off of his sophomore album, Faith in the Future, live – It was truly beautiful.

‍ ‍How Did I Get Here? is an exuberant album and I’m so glad I got to hear Louis perform songs from it. The How Did We Get Here? Tour is so spectacular! The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is a gorgeous waterfront venue that really enhanced the show, and right when the show ended, there were striking fireworks that were popping off behind the venue. I’m proud of Louis and how far he has come! Everyone needs to go to a Louis Tomlinson show if they get the chance.
